UPDATE ON THE GROWTH OF VIETNAMESE BASIL IN MAY 2023
As updated from the beginning of the crop, 2023 has two February lunar months, so this year's crop is planted 1 month later than usual.
After nearly 2 months of planting, basil has not grown favorably, is underdeveloped, and is early flowering due to the less rainy weather. This year, there are many earthworms that bite the basil plant. This type of worm is difficult to kill because they dig their nests deep in the ground. The damaged area accounts for about 20% of the area and has been newly planted by farmers.
After summing up the basil growing area in 2023, the statistics show that it is similar to 2022. The area shrinking due to urbanization is supplemented by the newly planted area later. The first basil cut is expected to be in early or mid-July and the finished basil oil will be available in early August if weather is favorable. The weather will start to rain more heavily from May when summer begins, hopefully just enough for the basil to grow well.
The volume of Vietnamese basil essential oil this year is unpredictable due to the erratic weather situation in recent years. The forecast of El Nino phenomenon in late summer-autumn this year is also a concern for the growth of basil.
Now, Techvina has a small volume of Vietnamese basil oil and can supply it to some customers who need to consume this oil in the next 3 -4 months.
The weather in recent years has been erratic and extreme. In stark contrast to the season of the crop in 2022, due to excessive rainfall, the hydroelectric reservoirs on the Red River flooded, causing many areas of the riverside alluvial land to be flooded. But this year, lack of rainfall, basil is slow growth and early aging.
