Techvina CO2 Extracts: Premium Botanical Extracts for Flavor, Fragrance & Nutraceuticals
As global demand for clean-label, high-performance natural ingredients continues to rise, CO2 extraction has established itself as the gold standard for capturing the full bioactive and aromatic value of botanical raw materials — with none of the thermal damage or chemical residue that compromise conventional methods.
At Techvina Holding JSC — Vietnam’s leading producer of essential oils and natural aroma chemicals — we are proud to introduce our CO2 Extracts portfolio: premium botanical extracts, sustainably sourced from Vietnam’s diverse agricultural regions and produced using advanced Supercritical CO2 Extraction technology.
1. What Is CO2 Extraction?
CO2 extraction — more precisely, Supercritical CO2 Extraction — is an advanced separation technology that uses carbon dioxide in its supercritical state as a clean, selective solvent to isolate bioactive compounds and aromatic molecules from botanical raw materials.
The Supercritical CO2 extraction process operates through a controlled sequence of pressurization, dissolution, and separation:
Step 1 — Pressurization: Liquid CO2 from supply cylinders is pumped into a heating unit and raised above its critical point (>31.1°C, >73.8 bar), converting it into a supercritical fluid.
Step 2 — Extraction: The supercritical CO2 flows through a sealed extraction vessel loaded with prepared botanical raw material (dried and milled to optimize surface area). As it percolates through the biomass, target compounds dissolve into the CO2 fluid — volatile aromatics, essential oils, bioactive compounds, and resins — depending on the pressure and temperature settings applied.
Step 3 — Separation: The CO2-extract mixture exits the extraction vessel and passes into a separator at reduced pressure. As pressure drops, CO2 loses its solvating power and reverts to a gas — releasing the extracted compounds, which precipitate out of solution as a pure, concentrated extract.
Step 4 — CO2 Recovery: The released CO2 gas is condensed, re-pressurized, and recycled back into the system — making the process both economically efficient and environmentally responsible, with near-zero solvent waste.
Key Technical Advantages
- Zero solvent residue — CO2 completely evaporates at ambient conditions, leaving no trace in the final extract
- Low operating temperature (35–60°C) — below the thermal degradation threshold of most heat-sensitive aromatic and bioactive compounds
- Tunable selectivity — pressure and temperature settings can be adjusted to target specific compound classes within the same botanical
- Full-spectrum output — captures volatile aromatics, non-volatile bioactives, oleoresins, and waxes that steam distillation cannot recover
- Sustainable — CO2 is recyclable within the system; no chemical waste generated
2. CO2 Extraction vs. Steam Distillation
The three most widely used extraction and separation methods in the natural ingredients industry each offer a distinct trade-off between temperature, yield, compound profile, and output type. The comparison below provides a technical overview:
| Criteria | CO2 Extraction | Steam Distillation |
| Operating Temp. | 35–60°C (below degradation threshold) | 100–140°C |
| Pressure | 73–300+ bar (tunable) | Atmospheric / slight over-pressure |
| Yield Efficiency | Up to 90%+ volatile recovery | ~60–82% |
| Heat-Sensitive Compounds | ✅ Fully preserved | ⚠️ Partial degradation |
| Solvent Residue | ✅ Zero — CO2 evaporates completely | ✅ None |
| Aroma Accuracy | Closest to raw plant profile | Altered by thermal process |
| Selectivity / Tunability | ✅ High — adjustable by P & T | Low — fixed process |
| Output Type | Full-spectrum extract (oil/resin/wax) | Essential oil (volatile fraction only) |
| Environmental Impact | CO2 recyclable, near-zero waste | High energy, water-intensive |
| Best For | Premium F&F, Nutra, Cosmetics, Pharma | Large-scale essential oil production |
